How to Play Wordle (and Win More Often)
The rules
You get six tries to guess a hidden five-letter word. After each guess the tiles change colour:
- Green – right letter, right spot.
- Yellow – the letter is in the word but in a different spot.
- Grey – the letter is not in the word.
There is one new word per day, the same for everyone, and it resets at midnight in your local time.
Best Wordle starting words
We tested every valid word against all 1,950 past answers. These common words left the fewest possible answers after one guess:

A simple 4-step strategy
- Open with a word from the table above.
- Use a second word with five new letters (e.g. RAISE → CLOTH).
- Keep green letters fixed and move yellow ones to new spots.
- Remember letters can repeat (like PENNY or SASSY) – if you're stuck, try a double letter.
